Boro, derived from the Japanese term boroboro, is stitched, patched and mended Japanese textiles. Essentially using a sashiko - running - stitch with thicker thread using scraps to make a ‘new’ cloth.
The workshop will use scraps and stitch, and from the textile you create you can make a cushion top or bag.
Glorious Welsh Quilts - with Sandie Lush FULLY BOOKED
Friday 10th & Saturday 11th September 2021 - two day course
10.00 am - 3.30 pm
£130
This class will give you the opportunity to explore the quilting patterns traditional to Wales. You will design your very own heirloom cushion, but you may choose to hand stitch one of the Welsh cushion patterns provided instead!
In a two day class there is the opportunity to create larger designs, though not enough time to prepare and quilt anything other than a cushion. Should you wish to perfect your quilting skills as well as create a larger design, it is recommended you bring either the items listed below for making a cushion or a sample already marked up so that some time in class can be spent stitching.
Requirements
18” x 18" square of top fabric
This can be soft calico, cotton sateen or a plain 100% cotton, preferably in a colour pale enough to see through.
If you also want enough for the back of the cushion, you will need an 18” x 44” strip.
18” x 18" square of backing fabric of similar weight and weave.
18” x 18" square of wadding. Either Hobbs wool or a 2oz polyester (preferably Hobbs Polydown) as these are the easiest waddings to hand quilt.
Quilting thread at least 2 shades darker than top fabric.
If you are travelling any distance or are unsure what to buy, a calico fabric pack containing all of the above can be pre-ordered at a cost of £9.00 by contacting Sandie at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Please allow three weeks’ notice before class.
Oakshott cotton fabric packs are available at the Welsh Quilt Centre shop.
You will also need:
14" quilting hoop
Thimbles (I use two!)
Tacking thread and needle and scissors
Fabric marker of your choice
Quilting ruler, pencil and eraser
Fine tip indelible black marker
For larger designs you will also need Selotape (preferably ‘magic’ tape) and a roll of greaseproof / tracing paper
