Cwilt Cymru Group Biography

This group of individual quilt artists, all living in or with a connection to Wales, came together originally to work with fellow Irish and Scottish makers to produce work for an exhibition, Spirit of The Celts. This opened at the Festival of Quilts at the NEC in Birmingham.in 2011. The exhibition went on to tour various venues including Stirling Art Gallery, Quilt Expo Beaujolais, Barry Art Central and Oriel Ynys Mon (Anglesey).

Following the success of this exhibition the Welsh members continued to work together and, joined by three Guest Artists, worked towards a second very successful touring exhibition, Connection, which was shown at galleries including the Forge Mill Needle Museum in Redditch, Minerva Arts Centre, Llanidloes and the Futures Gallery in the Pierhead Building which is part of the Welsh Assembly estate in Cardiff Bay. The third collection, Cynefin, is touring currently.

Several members of the group are themselves well established names in the quilt world and have exhibited their work both nationally and internationally.

“Although rooted in traditional quiltmaking, we aim to widen the interpretation of the craft by incorporating new methods and materials and use our skills to express ideas as art rather than to produce utilitarian pieces.”
